The Typical Custom Shape Engagement Process

1. Custom Shape Design

Every established business needs to plan and foster a brand identity. It's crucial to attract interest to your brand and to preserve its identity.
ColorFrog painted shapes can be instrumental in establishing a strong brand.
On the other hand, a misstep in shape design can severely harm your brand’s image, so taking care of your colour-display at retail is essential to our mission. We are fanatics at properly preserving and conveying the attributes of your brand and your design language.

2. Prototyping

The prototype phase is one of the most integral parts to the client engagement cycle. We believe that rapid prototyping and iteration is key to success. The quicker we can set up for you high-quality and performing 3d printed prototypes, the sooner you can receive business feedback and make your product better, faster and effective.

4. End Design

Event Marketing

By this time, the client has agreed with ColorFrog on a final shape design and process. The following should have been cleared by the project team:

  • Understand - Have dug into the design problem through research and competitive review.
  • Diverge - Has developed several solution candidates.
  • Decide - Has chosen the best ideas and hammer out a functional story.
  • Prototype - Built something quick and iterated while involving business users.
  • Validate - Shown the prototype to real users (in other words, people in retail with intimate consumer knowledge) and learn what works and what doesn't work.

The customer, with ColorFrog's support, has already uncovered issues, brainstormed solutions, made strategic choices, evaluated prototypes, and has observed the business handling the final version of the paint chip.

These cross-functional teams focused on the consumer, data, design, manufacturing and technology shorten the process and incorporate agile thinking to develop colour displays in a better and faster way.

5. Tooling

Designing the tooling required for our clients' projects represents a highly technical and often complex process that requires high precision and technical know-how to produce top-quality parts with tight tolerances. For example, the proper grade of material must be selected so components that run together do not wear out prematurely. Material hardness must also be determined to maintain the proper balance between wear and production cost. At ColorFrog, we usually work with plastic injection in ABS but we also work with different manufacturing processes depending on the project's variables. These variables are quantity, shape, size, function and budget. The more complex the products are, the more complex moulds are required. Mould design must often deal with features such as undercuts or threads which typically require more mould components. There are other components that can be added to a mould to form complex geometry; rotating devices (using mechanical racks and gears), rotational hydraulic motors, hydraulic cylinders, floating plates, and multi-form slides are some examples of this. We have often seen competitors working on sub-optimal technical solutions that bring as a result poor finish for a given budget, this is the result of a lack of understanding of what are the technical options for paint chip manufacturing.
